Plot: In the film, a random body is found in a bog in Ireland. It comes back to life… then three pairs of travelers mysteriously have car mishaps… which leads them all to wander aimlessly to the same exact cabin on the same exact night. Vinnie Jones shows up… and from there, we learn of the Legend of the Bog… spooky shit, right? But not really… considering that there is no actual legend of the bog… just a bunch of doofy fucks looking for redemption from their past sins and an Encino Man like douche who wanders around the countryside looking to score a little H2O.
The direction of the film renders most of the movie impotent. For one, everything looks cheap as shit. There are very few sets to begin with, and the one set that is there is functionally sparse. The pacing of the film is also off, and when shit does go down, it’s poorly handled, necessitating a few cutaway moments, a couple deaths that are cheap copouts, and a whole lot of disappointment. The character development is also fairly weak. It’s hard to tell who the main characters are, and since the cast isn’t that great, the idea that this would be an ensemble cast can only lead to even more disappointment.
The cast of the film features more recognizable faces than one would expect… given the quality of acting within the film. First off, we have Vinnie Jones (Midnight Meat Train, EuroTrip)… who doesn’t do all that much besides give a couple of cockeyed looks to the other actors in the film. Then there is Jason Barry (Valkyrie, MirrorMask), a professor who knows a bunch about bog bodies… which mostly amounts to him telling us over and over again that bog bodies were usually victims of violent rituals or foul play. You’ll also wonder at the woeful misuse of Nora-Jane Noone (The Descent, Doomsday), as a cohort of the professors. Together, with some stronger writing and some characters that were actually cool, this cast should have been able to act out a solid horror flick. As it is, it’s a missed opportunity.
